You Can Help Reduce Drug Overdose Deaths with Harm Reduction

Despite recently reported progress, the opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities across the nation. In our own community, too many families know the pain of losing a loved one to overdose. While the epidemic is far from over, together, we can make a difference. Oneida Behavioral Health offers life-saving harm reduction resources and support for those impacted by substance use disorders—and with your help, we can reach more community members and save more lives.

NARCAN®: A Lifesaving Tool

NARCAN®, also known as naloxone, is a nasal spray that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose in moments, restoring breathing and consciousness. Importantly, it is safe to use even if opioids are not involved, meaning there’s no harm in administering it if you’re unsure.

NARCAN®, also known as naloxone, is available for free and without judgement through Oneida Behavioral Health. It’s also often available through local pharmacies and other behavioral health departments. Learning how to use NARCAN® empowers you to act in an emergency and potentially save a life. Fentanyl and Xylazine Test Strips: Simple but Powerful Prevention Tools

The overdose crisis has been exacerbated by the increased presence of fentanyl and xylazine in street drugs. A very small amount of fentanyl can be fatal, while xylazine can cause painful side effects, such as sores that won’t heal leading to the loss of limbs. Awareness of these substances and prevention of their use is essential. Fentanyl and xylazine test strips allow individuals to detect these substances in other powders, pills or injectables, providing a vital safety measure. These strips are available for free through tribal health clinics, public health departments and Oneida Behavioral Health.
