Using Harm Reduction to Prevent Overdose

As communities across the country continue to struggle with the effects of opioid use, the need for realistic, evidence-based solutions has never been greater. Death due to overdose is not just a national issue—it’s a deeply local one.

Here in the Oneida community, we believe harm reduction is a powerful tool in this fight. Harm reduction meets individuals where they are. It acknowledges that overcoming substance use often requires time, compassion and repeated effort. For many, the road to recovery involves progress and setbacks, and every opportunity to support someone along that journey is valuable.

One effective harm reduction strategy is the use of fentanyl and xylazine test strips. These allow individuals to test substances before use, helping identify the presence of these increasingly common and deadly additives. Access to NARCAN is also critical. This life-saving medication can reverse an opioid overdose if it is administered quickly. It is easy to use and readily available. Overdose kits containing test strips and NARCAN can make the difference between life and death, enabling someone you love to live until they can choose a path to recovery.

We must move beyond stigma and judgment. By embracing harm reduction, we not only reduce the risk of overdose, but we also create pathways to care and recovery. At Oneida Behavioral Health, we are committed to supporting harm reduction efforts and increasing access to resources that save lives together.  Oneida Behavioral Health has NARCAN and test strips available by calling (920) 490-3790.
