Parent Engagement

🤝 Parent & Leadership Opportunities

Parents and guardians play a vital role in the success of the Oneida Head Start program. Families are encouraged and welcomed to take an active part in the classroom, program planning, decision‑making, and community activities. Research shows that when families are engaged, children thrive and Head Start is built around this belief.

👩‍🏫 Classroom Volunteers

Parents are invited to join classroom activities throughout the school year. Volunteering allows families to share cultural traditions, crafts and family stories and enjoy breakfast or lunch with their child.  Volunteers are supported and supervised by teaching staff to ensure a positive, safe experience. All volunteers must follow confidentiality policies and refrain from cell phone use while helping in the classroom.

Background checks are required for any parent volunteer.

🚌 Field Trip Chaperones

Head Start offers enriching field trips that extend classroom learning into the community. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate as chaperones, helping with:

  • Supervision
  • Safety transitions
  • Supporting group learning outside the classroom

A background check is required before the first field trip, and bus rider training may be required if assisting with transportation. Chaperones are essential partners who help create safe, memorable experiences for all children.

🏛️ Policy Council Representatives

The Policy Council is part of the formal governing structure of Oneida Head Start/Early Head Start. It includes:

  • Parents elected from each center
  • Community representatives

Policy Council members:

  • Review and help approve program policies
  • Work with leadership and the Oneida Business Committee
  • Participate in hiring decisions for certain Head Start positions
  • Serve as the parent voice in major program planning and decision‑making

This is one of the highest leadership roles available to families — an opportunity to advocate for all enrolled children and help shape the future of the program.

✨ Additional Ways Families Can Lead & Contribute

Beyond the core three, families can also:

  • Assist staff with posting flyers or community outreach
  • Share cultural knowledge, crafts, or language with classrooms
  • Participate in family events, workshops, and school‑wide activities
  • Contribute to the Family Literacy Program through home learning

These contributions strengthen the sense of community, deepen cultural connections, and support each child’s learning journey.
