Healthy Start to School

The start of a new school year isn’t just about fresh supplies and packed lunches; it is also a time of change and transition. New teachers, routines and classes for students and families can stir up a mix of excitement, uncertainty and stress. Amidst the chaos of busy schedules and checklists, Oneida Behavioral Health encourages you to take time to reflect.

A healthy return to school begins with support and emotional check-ins before kids even walk in on that first day of class. Encourage routines with moments for rest and regulation built in. Prioritize sleep, movement and connection, not just performance and productivity. Whether your student is entering kindergarten or their final year of high school, they need the space to feel heard and supported.

Make space for regular check-ins. Ask your student open-ended questions, regarding what they are nervous about or looking forward to. Make an effort to listen before immediately jumping to solve any problems they bring up.

Validate their emotions. Let your child know that whatever they are feeling is valid. It’s okay to feel excited, anxious, overwhelmed or unsure. Affirming their emotions can make a world of difference in helping them feel supported.

Involve them in routines. Giving your student the autonomy to participate in their new schedule can help build ownership and ease transitions. This could be picking out school supplies or setting up their own homework space—the little things can help with any adjustments.

Model calm and confidence. This time of year is an opportunity to model flexibility and self-compassion. Students often mirror the emotional tone of their caregivers, so staying steady and positive can give them a sense of security.

Reassure them that support is always available. Let your student know that it’s okay to ask for help, whether that be academically, socially or emotionally. Remind them that they aren’t alone, and there are resources to help.

As a parent or caregiver, remember, you don’t have to do this perfectly. Give yourself grace and remember that presence and patience are what your child will remember most. If this season feels overwhelming for anyone in your family, know that support is available. The team at Oneida Behavioral Health is here to help you navigate challenges and celebrate small victories.
