Grieving Overdose – You Are Not Alone

Grieving the loss of a friend or loved one can affect us deeply. Loss can cause an array of conflicting, raw and overwhelming emotions, and it can sometimes be difficult to express those feelings to others for a variety of reasons.

When the loss is due to an overdose, grieving becomes an even more complex process. This type of grief can prompt emotions like guilt, regret, resentment and even fear. It can be difficult to speak about substance use openly. And, your loss could lead to new unanticipated responsibilities, such as caring for surviving children who are also deeply affected by their loss. If you or someone you know has experienced loss due to overdose, please know that you do not need to face these feelings and circumstances alone. Oneida is a community, and there are others who can help you work through your grief.

If you’ve experienced loss, these ideas can help as you work through the grieving process:

  • Share your honest feelings and thoughts with the people you love.
  • Avoid using alcohol or drugs to numb your feelings; allow yourself to feel them instead.
  • Take care of yourself by going for a walk or making time to do something you enjoy.
  • Give yourself permission to feel your emotions, no matter what they are.
  • Seek support from others who have experienced a similar loss.

Following are resources that are available for those grieving due to overdose:
