Common truths about substance use recovery

While every recovery journey is as unique as the individual walking the path, it can be reassuring to know that there are some common truths to guide you. These truths can help you set realistic expectations about the process and give you a strong foundation for healing.

The time is only right when you decide it is. Recovery starts with a personal choice. People around you—friends, family, even professionals—can offer support and encouragement, but the decision to seek help is yours alone. You will know when the time is right, and that moment belongs to you.

Harm reduction can help you stay safe while you figure out your next steps. You, your friends, your family and community members can help by keeping harm reduction tools, like NARCAN® kits and fentanyl test strips, on hand. They’re available for free through Oneida Behavioral Health (OBH). Staying safe is the priority. Harm reduction isn’t about pushing you into treatment but keeping you alive and supported until you’re ready to take that next step. These tools are easy to access and can make a life-saving difference.

When you do decide to pursue recovery, know that it might not be one-and-done. Recovery isn’t linear. It’s normal to stumble, to try again and to feel frustrated. What matters is that you keep showing up for yourself. Every attempt is progress, and every setback is part of the journey. You’re not failing—you’re learning.

When you are ready, culturally relevant integrated support is available. OBH offers a range of services that work together to support long-term healing. These include Same Day Substance Abuse Care, counseling, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Recovery Coaching. We can also connect you with Medically Supervised Detox services and other levels of care depending on your needs. Your treatment plan is built around you, taking into account things like family involvement, mental health, transportation and location.

Peer support, like that available through the Oneida Recovery Nest, can make a meaningful difference in your recovery journey. It’s support from people who’ve walked their own path and understand the ups and downs of recovery. Connecting with others who’ve been in your shoes can offer a sense of comfort, insight and belonging that’s hard to find elsewhere.

You are not alone. We can’t wait to meet you. Recovery is a journey, not a one-time event. OBH reassesses your plan as your needs change, making sure it stays aligned with your goals. Whether you’re just starting out or working to maintain progress, just know we’re here to support you every step of the way.
