For Immediate Release: September 27, 2025
(Oneida Reservation) – It is with heavy heart the Oneida Nation announces that Ernie “Steve” Stevens, Jr., has begun his journey to the Creator’s land. Stevens is a previous Councilman of the Oneida Nation and current Chairman for the Indian Gaming Association.
Oneida Nation Chairman Tehassi Tasi Hill stated “Ernie was an amazing man. While he is widely known for his work in Indian Gaming; our community and many others across Turtle Island know him for his unwavering support of his family, youth programming and the pursuit of sovereignty protection. Trail-blazing leaders such as Ernie pave the way for uncontested legacies and the Nation will be forever grateful for his unselfish contributions.”
While our community and many across Indian country share in the mourning of Ernie’s passing, the Stevens family is respectfully asking for privacy as the family navigates this profound loss. With a good mind, a good heart and a strong fire, we offer our prayers for his spirit to rest in eternal peace.
More information and announcements will be shared in the coming days as it becomes available. The Nation’s flags will fly at half-staff until funeral services for Stevens are completed.
