Noted Ojibwe author has died of cancer at 73, family says

CLOQUET, Minn. (AP) ~ Ojibwe author, poet and playwright Jim Northrup has died of complications of cancer. He was 73.

Northrup shared his Anishinaabe language and heritage through his books, storytelling and plays, including a one-man show “Rez Road 2000.”

His family says Northrup’s wake and funeral will be conducted in the Anishinaabeg way. The wake will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Sawyer Community Center in Sawyer. The funeral is Friday at 10 a.m., also in the community center.

Northrup served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. He chronicled modern Native American life in his syndicated column Fond du Lac Follies.

In an interview last month with Minnesota Public Radio (http://bit.ly/2aNdeyJ ), Northrup said he had nothing to be afraid of as he faced the end of his life because he was simply changing addresses.
