(Oneida Reservation, WI) – The Oneida Nation’s Safer at Home declaration continues to be in effect until June 11, 2020 regardless of the chaos that has been caused by the WI Supreme Court ruling and surrounding local municipalities rescinding their Safe at Home Orders.
It is unfortunate that local Public Health Officials were placed under political pressure to make a decision about safer at home practices, regardless of the science. The Oneida Nation is taking a responsible approach to reopening businesses by ensuring safe workplace plans are in place prior to their opening, as identified in our current order. Under the situation which has been created in the greater Green Bay area, a blanket opening without required guidelines, we are concerned for the health and safety of the community, our customers and tribal members.
We remind the community that the Nation’s declaration remains in place as a conscious decision to ensure the community’s health and well-being. We ask that the community at large respect theNation’s decision. Based on the advice of our Public Health Officials, we believe the continued practice of social distancing and other requirements such as masking, restrictions will ensure the downward trending of this virus’s spread remains on its current path. Should conditions sufficiently change to allow a re-opening sooner, and in a safe way, the Nation will do so under the advisement of appropriate Public Health Officials and based on science.
The Oneida Nation wants area businesses to be able to open in a safe manner that protects employees and customers. Until those safer practices have been approved, the Oneida Nation has not changed its Safer at Home Declaration and the businesses identified under the Safer at Home Declaration should remain closed. Businesses like Thornberry Creek at Oneida have been authorized to open under safe business practices that have been reviewed by the Nation’s Public Health Officer that meet and exceed current recommended practices. The Oneida Casino also meets the criteria for opening under the Nation’s Safer at Home Declaration. Both businesses have posted their safe reopening plans on their website and available for their customers to view.
The Oneida Nation continues to move forward with a Good Heart, a Good Mind and a Strong Fire.
