The Oneida Nation joined the Morongo Tribe of Mission Indians, the Cherokee and the Quinault Indian Nation earlier this year in an effort to protect the interest of our children and families. Litigation brought by the states of Texas, Louisiana and Indiana, along with three foster parents, challenged the authority of the Indian Child Welfare Act. In this case, a ruling came yesterday that struck down the Indian Child Welfare Act, finding it unconstitutional. The Oneida Nation believes that after 40 years, the attack on our sovereignty is only further threatened by the action taken by the court in this case. We will continue to remain enjoined with the tribes in an appeal. Please see the following news release issued by the four intervening Tribes today.
