“I’ve got many family members that I’ve lost to having strokes. Dr Dempsey and Ananda were on top of everything with me. I loved seeing my artery’s in my neck and they explained to me what was going on and the importance of keeping them running smoothy. They also made me aware of my BP. They had me taking my blood pressure at home, as my BP was running high. I’m feeling better as it is now under control. I’m enjoying my time out in my flower gardens and feeling much better. This team really made me see the importance, of really taking care of myself!”

“The reason I did the Oneida Stroke Program was to help the Oneida Tribe better understand strokes within tribal members. For me to get healthier and exercise more by walking 10,000 steps a day.”

“As an Oneida I was raised to respect education. Thus I volunteered for the program thinking that I was in pretty good shape. Then I was basically told that I was fat and headed for a stroke unless I changed my ways. Thanks to the team and my wife, I changed my ways, and my tests kept getting better. Though I miss potato chips.”

“I am so thankful that I was able to participate in Oneida’s Stroke Study! I am all about health prevention and this study gave me the opportunity to make medical decisions to help lower my cholesterol and reduce my risk of a stroke or other related medical issues. Dr. Dempsey and staff were very informative and nice, and Amanda provided me with great support throughout the study to help me stay on track. Thank you for this opportunity!”

“By participating in the Stroke Prevention program, I’ve received advice and encouragement to make healthier choices for myself and have been cheered on along the way. Making big changes right away can be overwhelming, it’s the small changes added together that make big changes!”

“Being 50 years old, this was like a midlife check in for me. The stroke prevention team was helpful in working with me by reminding me about portion size, goal setting, and goal succeeding. Things that they have helped me with during the study, has stuck with me and continues to help me to be more aware of my life choices, and hopefully in the long run will prevent me from having a stroke.”

“I chose to participate in the Stroke Prevention study after learning that Native Americans have the highest risks for strokes compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the US. I wanted to see where I was, and to know if I should be doing anything differently. Being a pretty active person some people said that I had nothing to worry about, but the truth was my cholesterol was high and that was something I wanted to get control of early so I wouldn’t end up with problems in the future. The stroke prevention program helped make me more aware of things that were going on inside of my body, and provided me with knowledge and resources so I could take better care of myself. I would recommend everyone to find out where they stand because I am the type of person who rather know now while I can do something about it than wait until it is too late and say “only if I knew sooner”. Prior to colonization and processed foods our people were so healthy and active, and I would like to help get our people back on the right track instead of loosing so many of our loved ones to things that we could have prevented.”

“I’m thankful for the opportunity of being selected to participate in the stroke prevention study that was provided in our community. Although I’m currently at a low risk of a stroke, it gave me peace of mind completing the year long program. And I really appreciated the monthly check-ins with Amanda to help keep me on track with my goals set each month. I encourage any & all community members to participate in this stroke prevention study. If nothing else it is good information to have about the brain & the body!”
