Safe Summer Fun: A Guide for Healthy Adventures
Longer days, warmer temperatures and no school…what is a kid to do? Summer is a time of fun and relaxation, adventure and exploration. Summer is also a time when, without the structure of the school day, kids may be more susceptible to risky choices such as underage drinking, vaping or using electronics all day.
Here are some healthy ideas you can use this summer to help keep your children active and engaged:
- Engage your child in summer school or a summer camp program that teaches a fun skill and builds self-esteem.
- Plan a visit to the Oneida Nation Museum, where you can share our Oneida Culture with your child.
- Visit the Oneida Community Library together. Learn about the wide variety of events and programs they offer across all age groups at https://oneida-nsn.gov/events-programs/.
- Plan regular trips to area parks. Getting kids moving while outdoors is a healthy way to burn off extra energy while getting some fresh air. (Make certain kids stay hydrated with healthy beverages, like water, and fresh fruits.)
- Consider having SmallTalks with your kids this summer to talk about risky behaviors and to set your expectations. Scan the QR code at for SmallTalks to hear Oneida Nation Business Committee Member Jennifer Webster talk about the importance of small talks with young people.
Remember, summer is a time of adventure, exploration, joy and fun, but it’s important to keep children engaged, stimulated and safe throughout the season. Be proactive and plan ahead for activities, stay hydrated, be safe and set expectations with your child.
