Stay Safe This Season: Holiday Tips to Avoid Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Risks
As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to gatherings, celebrations and spending time with family and friends. While it’s a time for connection, it’s also when alcohol, tobacco and other drug use can increase. At Oneida Behavioral Health, we want to ensure our community enjoys a safe and healthy holiday season by offering tips to reduce the risks associated with substance use.
Understand the Impacts
Alcohol, tobacco and other substances can affect our health, especially during stressful times. Social pressures and emotional challenges during the holidays can lead to higher levels of substance use, increasing the risk of accidents, illnesses and family tensions. Staying informed and mindful of these risks can help protect ourselves and our loved ones.
Plan for Safe Celebrations
Here are a few ways to keep holiday celebrations safe:
- Designate a Sober Leader: If alcohol is involved, choose someone to stay sober and look out for everyone’s safety, especially younger family members.
- Offer Non-Alcoholic Options: Make sure there are appealing non-alcoholic beverages, like lemon water, coffee, etc., available to normalize not drinking.
- Know Your Limits: If you drink, set clear limits ahead of time. Remember, alcohol affects people differently based on weight, age and tolerance. If you or someone you love over-indulges, make sure they have a safe and sober ride home.
- Support Loved Ones in Recovery: The holidays can be tough for those in recovery. Create a space where they feel safe and supported.
- Avoid Peer Pressure: Don’t feel pressured to drink or use drugs. Consider alternative ways to enjoy the gathering.
