Crafting Culture: Quillwork Class Brings Tradition to Life at Our Library

This week, our library transformed into a hub of creativity and cultural exploration as we hosted a fascinating quillwork class. The event, which took place on Tuesday, was a resounding success, bringing together community members of all ages to learn this traditional Native American craft.

Mastering the Wrap Technique

Our talented Library Aide, Gabbie Metoxen, took the lead as instructor for this hands-on workshop. With patience and expertise, she guided participants through the intricacies of the wrap technique – a fundamental skill in quillwork. This technique involves wrapping dyed porcupine quills or a modern substitute around a core material, creating intricate patterns and designs.

From Learning to Creating

The class focused on creating keychains, a practical and personal item that allowed participants to take their new skills home with them. It was inspiring to see the concentration and creativity of our attendees as they carefully wrapped and arranged their materials, watching their keychains take shape.

A Community United in Creativity

What made this event particularly special was the diverse group of participants it attracted. From curious beginners to those with some crafting experience, everyone found something to enjoy and learn. Even our Library Manager, Eliza Skenandore, rolled up her sleeves and joined the class, crafting her own keychain alongside the other attendees. This kind of engagement from our staff really emphasizes our commitment to community involvement and lifelong learning.

More Than Just a Craft

While the end product – a beautifully crafted keychain – was certainly a highlight, the class offered so much more. It provided an opportunity for community members to connect, share stories, and learn about the cultural significance of quillwork. These kinds of experiences are vital in preserving and celebrating traditional crafts and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Looking Forward

The success of this quillwork class has inspired us to consider more craft-based workshops in the future. We’re always looking for ways to engage our community and provide enriching experiences that go beyond our bookshelves. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Gabbie for sharing her skills and to all the attendees who made this event so special. Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn are what make our library a vibrant community center. Stay tuned for more exciting events coming up at the library. Whether it’s crafting, reading, or learning, we’re here to provide experiences that inform, inspire, and bring our community together.
