For the first time since 2020, the Oneida Nation’s General Tribal Council (GTC) will convene in-person meetings at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center on two (2) occasions in January 2023. The meetings will take place Monday, January 16th, and Monday, January 30th, with each meeting scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
The Oneida Business Committee (OBC) is in support of holding these in-person meetings as it has been three years since the GTC has been able to gather to conduct the Nation’s business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee also wishes to help bring a sense of normalcy back to the community.
Regardless of COVID infection levels in Brown, Outagamie, and Milwaukee Counties, the OBC plans on moving forward with these GTC meetings, which will include a masking requirement. The Radisson is a closed space and COVID vaccinations among the tribal membership vary; therefore, masking will be required for both the January 16th and 30th in-person meetings. Many elders and other high-risk tribal members will likely attend these GTC meetings, therefore the committee believes masking is a prudent safety measure due to the triple threat of COVID, the flu, and RSV currently evident on and near the Reservation.
Social distancing will not be enforced as the meeting venue lacks the seating capacity to distance the approximately 1,700 Oneida Nation citizens expected to be in attendance. The OBC also notes that while conducting business in other government settings, such as federal meetings or with other tribes, the elected officials, including the OBC, are required to provide proof of vaccination to attend these meetings; and is the reason why the OBC is often seen or pictured unmasked during these events.
Should the OBC be forced to cancel either of the scheduled meetings due to inclement weather, the following are the make-up dates:
- January 16th meeting make-up date is Monday, February 6th, 2023.
- January 30th meeting make-up date is Monday, February 27th, 2023.
