Mahkimetas, Virginia Mae

Virginia Mae (Thornton) Mahkimetas, 69, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2017 at her home in Green Bay.

Virginia was born to the late Alma (Baird) and John C. Thornton on March 12, 1948.

In 1994, Virginia married the love of her life, Leon P. Mahkimetas. They remained happily married until he passed away in 2006. They loved to travel and play bingo together.

Virginia worked diligently for the United States Post Office and retired in 2010. She spent her remaining years enjoying time with her daughters and grandchildren. She was a superb pie maker, loved rummaging and visiting, and was always preserving many family memories through crafting.

Virginia is survived by her four daughters, Nina of Green Bay, Sarah of Oneida, Rita of Green Bay and Theresa of Green Bay, and three step-children, Matthew, Marla and Arnold “Keith.” She is further survived by her seventeen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, niece and nephews, brother-in-law Robert, and special friend Sue Daniels.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and John, husband Leon, sister Rita, nephew Merle and special friend Mindimoye.

Family and friends may call at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, beginning at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. The Oneida Hymn Singers will perform at 11:00, with a prayer service beginning at 11:30. Burial will follow at the Oneida Sacred Burial Grounds.

Although our mother may not have lead an enchanted life, she was highly intelligent and extremely funny, and had such a good heart. She was there for her family when we needed her most and she will continue to be in spirit.
