The Oneida buffalo herd has suffered a setback with the deaths of five one-year-old calves that occurred between Sunday, April 3 and Friday, April 8.

According to Ralinda Ninham-Lamberies the bison may have drank runoff water from the pasture instead of fresh water. The Oneida Farm has contacted a veterinarian to check on the rest of the herd.

“They are being moved to their summer pasture sooner than normal,” said Ninham-Lamberies. “We’re beginning the worming protocol this morning.”

The Oneida Environmental Department has been asked to test the area for environmental concerns.

According to Ninham-Lamberies, the rest of the herd seems to be ok. The young calves may be more vulnerable to organisms that may have been in the runoff water.
